This brooch is similar in design to the Trinacria, a 3-pointed symbol seen on the flag of Sicily and later adopted as a heraldic symbol of the Isle of Man. The Trinacria is formed by three legs conjoined at the hips and flexed in triangle and three stalks of wheat. Sicily is a triangular island and was originally a Greek possession. Trinacria is the Greek word for 3-pointed and was the name by which the Romans knew Sicily.
